10 Essential Movies To Understand What Great Cinematography Looks Like

It’s one of my favorite things, and I love it all from gift-giving to baking to the decorations, but I especially love Christmas music. Here are 11 songs you should consider adding to your Christmas playlists. Perhaps a group photo, a selfie, or even an unfortunate snipe of your best friend. You’ll feel loads better knowing you’ll have something to always remember the first moments of 2025 by.

Is it possible to make a good movie out of a novel that doesn’t have a tear?

An entirely different discussion could be had about what constitutes good acting, but it undoubtedly has a substantial effect on how well is a movie is received. Depending on the type of movie involved, the performance may be naturalistic (method) or stylized (non-method) acting — either way, it is the responsibility of the actor to bring his or her character to life. When multiple actors are involved, the way they are arranged in the frame lends extra weight to their relationships and ambitions. Spider-Verse utilizes one of the most unique art styles amongst all animated pictures. Every single visual and frame in the movie looks like it was pulled straight out of a comic book.

STORY

It’s a moment between Scrooge (both present and past), and Belle, whose love he cast aside before giving in to a life focused on money. The Muppet goofiness stops for just a few moments that make the emotional stakes for Scrooge clear, and gives Sir Michael Caine an opportunity to warble a tune. You can stream The Muppet Christmas Carol on Disney+.

This is one of the most important qualities in my book, because if a film makes you feel any sort of way, that means it’s effective. Anyone can put moving images on a screen, but the moment those images tap into your emotions and affect you in any sort of way, that’s a great thing. That’s also the thing — a film may make someone feel joyful while another person sees the exact same film and feels indifferent. Think about it — whether it be from sadness or happiness, when has anyone ever shed a tear or cried during a film and at the end said, “I didn’t like it.” You almost CAN’T.

For example, Taxi Driver visually represents the tone and feeling of the bleak, dark state that New York was in during the 1970s. Even if movies do not feature contemporary stories (are period or sci fi films) they often still carry traits which indicate or represent the feelings of the time in which they were conceived. As humans, our lives are also just one big story, so drawing theories, ideas, emotions, truths and themes out of narrative events is something which our brains are accustomed to doing. Many great films have the impact and longevity that they do by taking simple concepts and conveying them through story – almost like a fable. “Main dramatic topic” and “conflict” sound huge, yet nuanced tensions captivate as much with a skilled narrator. Of course, stories about livelihood hardships or James Bond-style tragedy plots are enthralling.

A lot of a movie’s bonus points come from a good musical score — filled with motifs, recurring themes, all while being unique but not too distracting — that give a film its flavor. We all recognize John Williams’ iconic opening notes of the Star Wars franchise, and how it instills the nostalgia and fondness that keeps drawing us back to the theater. Some of the best movies make us forget that we are even in the theater, thanks to a number of creative decisions made on each level of the movie’s production. You can read all of the academic papers you’d like on the cinematic apparatus, but for now we’ll start with the basics of movie analysis.

What makes a movie truly great?

Things To Do That Are Better Than Writing A Paper

Will Smith plays an advertising executive who retreats from life following the death of his daughter. His friends and loved ones aren’t able to connect, and he tries to cope by writing letters to his conceptions of Love, Time, and Death—all of whom respond. It’s all a bit silly, but Smith leads a fabulous cast who very nearly sell the fantastical premise, and offer some genuinely weepy moments. Queerphobia was, as we all know, entirely eradicated decades ago, so it might seem odd that a gay romance would raise eyebrows, but that’s just how things were back then.

The film is careful not to glorify the violence but shows its negative impact. Earlier this week, I ran across a quote from author N.D. Wilson is the author of a few different fantasy series such as 100 Cupboards, Ashtown Burials, and Outlaws of Time, and he also co-hosts the Stories Are Soulfood podcast. That title alone is enough to make obvious the way Wilson engages with books, movies, and television.

A successful producer can help a film achieve widespread recognition, allowing it to resonate with a broader audience. Talented actors, such as Tom Hanks, Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, and Robin Williams, have shown immense skill in portraying diverse characters on screen. These actors are often praised for their authenticity and emotional resonance in their performances. A good movie review should captivate the readers, giving them enough information to understand the main idea and theme of the film without revealing too much. This, in turn, helps the viewers make an informed decision about whether or not to watch the movie.

Moreover, the presence of conflict in their lives or the requirement for the character to complete a task or gain something that requires negotiating hurdles and conflict almost always triggers this circumstance. If the writers don’t perform, if the director doesn’t have a clear vision they cannot do their job — hence why the score and director precede the actors in this list. That’s before I even mention the added effect of a visually captivating, equally emotional scene to heighten those emotions further. You can’t really delve into this in brief, but as you start natura quiz to learn about these art forms it becomes apparent. First and foremost is, indeed, communicating that central theme or experiment to the audience in a way that generates that satisfying artistic purging of which Tarkovsky wrote. Any rules you break have to be in service to this goal.

For example, Logan is a pretty violent film, it’s also one of my favorites of the last decade. It tells the story of a broken superhero who lives in an uber-violent world. Of course, he contributes to that violence and kills more people during the 2+ hour runtime than anybody.

A truly great film can find the balance between financial performance and viewer satisfaction. In contrast, a bad movie might still succeed at the box office but receive low ratings from the audience. As a result, it is crucial to consider both aspects when evaluating the quality of a film. A compelling story is the backbone of any good movie.
